FAQs
Everything you need to know before your stay at The Ironmongers Boutique, Aylsham.

We will send you a personal digital guide to The Ironmongers and the local area a few days before you arrive — but if you have a question in the meantime, you’ll likely find the answer here. And if not, just drop us a message and we’ll come straight back to you.

Arrival & Check-In

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is from 4pm and check-out is by 10am. If you need a little flexibility either way, just get in touch — we’ll always do our best to accommodate you.

How do I get into my room — do I need to collect a key?

No keys needed! All rooms use smart door locks, and your personal access code will be sent to you by text message on the morning of your arrival. It’s seamless and means you can arrive entirely on your own terms — no waiting around, no reception desk.

If you haven’t received your code by midday on your arrival day, just send us a quick text and we’ll get it sorted straight away.

Will I receive anything before I arrive?

Yes — a few days before your stay we’ll send you our personal digital guide to The Ironmongers and Aylsham. It covers everything from parking and check-in to our favourite local restaurants, walks and things to do. It’s well worth a read before you arrive.

Parking

Is there parking at the hotel?

There’s no on-site parking, but Aylsham has two free public car parks very close by — one less than 80 metres away and another around 250 metres from the door. We’ll include a parking map in your pre-arrival guide.

One thing to be aware of: please avoid leaving your car in the Market Place overnight on Sunday, Monday or Thursday evenings, as market traders begin setting up early the following morning. The free car parks are a much better option and only a short walk away.
Breakfast & Food

Is breakfast included?

We don’t serve breakfast ourselves — but we think what’s on your doorstep is even better. Breadsource, one of Norfolk’s most celebrated artisan bakeries, is literally downstairs from you. Wake up, walk down the stairs, and treat yourself to exceptional pastries, sourdough and coffee — it’s one of the genuine highlights of staying here.

Just steps from the door you’ll also find Madeleines for a wonderful brunch, Biddy’s Tea Rooms for a proper Norfolk afternoon tea, and Emma’s tapas bar and cocktail bar right in the building with us. Aylsham is a genuinely wonderful food town and we love that guests get to experience it properly rather than a hotel dining room.

The Rooms

Are all the rooms the same?

Not at all — that’s rather the point! Each of our 8 bedrooms has been individually designed to celebrate a different historic market trade of Aylsham, from the Haberdashery to the Confectioners. Every room has its own distinct character, décor and feel. Have a look at each one on our Bedrooms page and find the one that speaks to you.

What facilities are in every room?

Every room includes: a tea and coffee corner, luxury bathroom with large shower, smart LED TV, complimentary WiFi, luxury towels and linen,
hairdryer, sustainable toiletries and a comfortable seating area. Most rooms also have original timber beams, warm oak floors with underfloor heating and views over the historic Market Place.

Full details and features are listed on each individual room page.

Dogs

Can I bring my dog?

We’d love to welcome them! We offer six dog-friendly rooms for well-behaved dogs at a cost of £15 per stay. Please contact us directly to arrange this when booking.

Aylsham and the surrounding area is a wonderful place for dogs — the Blickling Hall estate, Bure Valley Path and the North Norfolk coast all offer brilliant walks whatever the weather. And here’s a little treat: tag a photo of your dog enjoying their stay on Instagram and we’llgive you 10% off your next visit. We love seeing our canine guests!

Nearby & Things to Do

What’s nearby — what should we do?

You’re wonderfully placed. Our top recommendations:

Blickling Hall (5 min drive) — one of England’s finest National Trust properties, with magnificent gardens, a lake, woodland walks and a fascinating history including the Boleyn family connection

Bure Valley Railway (5 min walk) — a beautiful narrow-gauge steam railway to Wroxham, with a scenic walking and cycling path running alongside
Norfolk coast (25 min drive) — Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea, Sheringham and Cromer are all within easy reach

Norwich (25 min drive) — a magnificent medieval city with a castle, cathedral, brilliant independent restaurants and a wonderful market
Norfolk Broads (15 min drive) — hire a boat, kayak the Bure, or simply explore on foot

We’ll share many more ideas — including our personal favourites — in your pre-arrival guide.
Are there things for children to do nearby?

Plenty! Blickling Hall and its grounds are wonderful for families, as is the Bure Valley Railway. Bewilderwood is a brilliant adventure
playground in the trees a short drive away. The Norfolk coast offers crabbing, paddling and miles of beach. Wroxham Barns has a junior farm and funfair. Norwich Castle has fantastic interactive exhibits. Honestly, the list goes on — Norfolk is a superb destination for families.

Accessibility

Is the hotel accessible?
All guest rooms are on the first and second floors of our Grade II listed building and we don’t have lift access — something we’re limited by as a listed property. That said, we’ve thought carefully about accessibility throughout:
-
The staircase has handrails on both sides with deliberately shallow treads for safe, consistent access
-
If you let us know in advance, we’ll always allocate you a first-floor room and be on hand to help with luggage
-
Subtle LED lighting runs 24/7 throughout the building
-
Anti-slip bath mats are always available on request
-
We have one dedicated dog-free room for guests with allergies
-
The Ironmongers is on the Norwich to Cromer bus route and free tarmac parking is available 30 metres away
-
Ground-floor food and retail businesses in the building have been fitted with accessible doors and disabled toilet facilities in line with building regulations

If you have specific accessibility requirements, please get in touch before booking and we’ll talk you through everything personally.
