If you are planning a visit to Norfolk this summer, there is a wonderful reason to spend time wandering through our historic market town. The Aylsham snail trail is officially launching to celebrate the rich heritage and beautiful architecture of the area, 

Affectionately coined the 'Snailsham' trail, this interactive community project provides a way to explore the town's history at a suitably relaxed pace. Whether you are a solo traveller fascinated by Georgian architecture, or a family looking for a fun morning out, this trail offers something genuinely special.

As a boutique hotel housed within a carefully restored Grade II listed building, we at the Ironmongers are incredibly passionate about local history. We could not be more thrilled to see our town's heritage celebrated in such a creative way, and we’re delighted to be a part of the trail.

Aylsham Snail Trail - 22 Unique Snails, 22 Historic Landmarks

The Aylsham snail trail is a sprawling, open-air art exhibition. The walking trail is comprised of 22 completely unique snails, each designed to highlight a different key historical feature or building within the town.

Rather than sticking to one medium, the organisers have brought together a fantastic mix of local talent and varied materials to create these gastropod guides:

• Stone: Six of the snails are exquisite, hand-crafted stone carvings by the highly respected local sculptor Teucer Wilson.
  

• Wood and Metal: Two bespoke snails have been crafted from wood and metal, adding an industrial and rustic contrast to the route.
  

• Illustrations: Several snails have been beautifully illustrated by Aylsham-based artists, bringing vibrant colour and local character to the streets.
  

• Interactive Rubbing Posts: Four of the stops feature special rubbing posts, allowing younger visitors (or the young at heart!) to collect snail images as they make their way around the route.
  

To make the experience as engaging as possible, each snail features a dedicated QR code. Simply scan the code with your smartphone, and you will be instantly taken to a webpage detailing the fascinating history of the building that specific snail represents. For those who prefer a tangible keepsake, beautifully printed guides will also be available to help you navigate the route.

The Grand Unveiling: 1st August Launch Event

To kick off the Aylsham snail trail in style, a brilliant launch event is taking place on the 1st August outside the Town Hall.

The undisputed star of the show will be the trail's magnificent centrepiece: a giant snail painted by the renowned Aylsham-based artist Mik Richardson. This vibrant, large-scale piece will take up permanent residence outside the Town Hall, serving as the perfect starting point for your historical walking tour.

10:30 am	The official unveiling of Mik Richardson's giant centrepiece sculpture and the formal opening of the trail.
11:00 am	The start of the annual Slow Food snail race!

Why Snails? The Cittaslow Connection

You might be wondering, why snails? The choice of a snail is no accident. Aylsham is incredibly proud to be a designated "Cittaslow" town—part of the international Slow City movement that grew out of the Slow Food initiative.

The Cittaslow philosophy is all about taking the time to enjoy a high quality of life, supporting local artisans, protecting the environment, and celebrating regional food and drink. The symbol of this global movement is the snail. The Aylsham snail trail is a literal representation of taking things slowly, looking up at the historic architecture, and appreciating the community around you.
